KappaGuerra: Play, Movement, and the Only War That Matters
Embedded below: A conversation with Dr. Hakeem Ali-Bocas Alexander on the philosophy of KappaGuerra, plus the opening performance from the Healthy Living Expo on Sunday, July 19th.
KappaGuerra carries its entire philosophy in its name: the only war to wage is within. This practice fuses martial arts and dance into a form of improvisational play. There are no students, only training partners. There are no rigid forms to imitate, only authentic self-expression to discover.
The results announce themselves through power, precision, and fluidity. Tornado spins, 540 kicks, backflips—movements executed with full control and zero chronic pain anywhere in the body. The secret resides entirely in the method: play as the primary engine of physical development.
When people gather to train, the session unfolds like a living conversation. Someone who practiced capoeira briefly years ago steps back into the flow with muscle memory intact and a genuinely open attitude. A complete beginner who described the movement as “like a real-life Power Ranger” brings fresh energy and a completely different style. A Michael Jackson artist drops in for a few minutes and weaves moonwalk footwork into the exchange. Each person contributes a unique movement language, and the game absorbs all of it.
KappaGuerra Podcast & Supporters Club: Live and Remote Training
This is the architecture of KappaGuerra. Light tips surface organically when something spontaneous deserves recognition. The phrase “yeah, you see how you did that? that’s exactly what I mean” lands deeper than any correction. Drilling fundamentals belongs to solo practice, on each person’s own time. When partners meet, they play.
The standard approach to martial arts demands imitation of an external ideal, followed by judgment against that standard. KappaGuerra inverts this completely. There are billions of ways to move a human body. Encouraging that variety produces genuine confidence, physical freedom, and a community where people feel seen in their expression.
That community grows each week. Sessions happen Thursdays at 10 AM and Sundays at 8 AM at Vibe Park, corner of Cypress and 18th in Hampton Roads, across from Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii. Anyone interested can call or text 757-763-9621 to join or suggest additional times.
